Certain archetypes of personalities often use fashion to wear their heart on their sleeve. This brings us to one of the most recognisable personas to ever merge with fashion and they are the geeks! Also known as nerdy, academia or even Ivy League fashion, geek fashion has strong visuals and is quite unique. And you don’t actually have to have a crazy high IQ to follow the trend, but just have to be “geek out” over something and you’re good to go!
‘Geek chic’, which is the 2024 update on nerdy fashion, is a little bit different. It emerged from a long line of K-pop stars wearing Gentle Monster’s geeky, square glasses; with supermodels later joining in and completing the look with silhouettes and ensemble pieces that match the vibe.
What Does ‘Geek Chic’ Look Like In 2024?
Geeks in 2024 are turning up the sex appeal of the trend. It’s hot, a little risqué and includes minimal elements of coquette styling. Of course, there are the square-rimmed rimless or thick-rimmed glasses. Pair it with academia-approved hairstyles like pigtails, and low buns with centre-parting (Gen Z is quaking in their boots!) and keep the makeup to the minimum.
When it comes to the ensembles, we’re talking graphic tees referring to your favourite movies, shows, anime or video games. Vintage-inspired sweaters and cardigans are great layering options. Button-up shirts with fun patterns or prints, such as plaid or novelty designs will get the aesthetic so right. Retro-style dresses or skirts with nerdy motifs or patterns are great for off-duty looks. High-waisted pants or skirts paired with suspenders can be your ‘OTT’ look for the week.
And accessorising with bow ties, neckties or quirky socks with playful patterns or designs are ace styling options. Throw on a pair of headphones with your favourite audiobook playing and you’ve nailed the trend.
How To Make The Trend Your Own?
Regardless of where the latest fashion is taking its references from, you can always make it your own. For instance, geeky fashion has its roots in the subcultures and communities that love to interact with science fiction, fantasy, gaming, comic books, technology, and intellectual pursuits.
Iconic pop culture characters, symbols, and themes found in these worlds have gone from being a niche subculture to mainstream fashion moments. And it’s the fan bases that keep the trend alive. So to make ‘Geek Chic’ your own, look at references that are specifically unique to you.
As an anime and manga fan myself, I often reach for the printed-tee and flared pants section of my wardrobe to bring out my ‘geeky’ side. With thrifting becoming an integral shopping behaviour for modern fashion enthusiasts, it’s easier to find vintage or novelty pieces that you can pair with plaid skirts, Mary Jane flats and old blazers from your school uniforms to rebrand the look.
Luxury fashion houses like Chanel and Miu Miu have also been heavily inspired by the ‘Geek Chic’ movement, making this fashion trend one of the most versatile and wearable trends we’ve seen emerge in recent times!
